Educational Background

Prof. Nikolaos G. Nikitakis graduated in Dentistry (DDS, 1996) and Medicine (MD, 2012) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece. He received his PhD (2002) in Oral and Experimental Pathology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), USA. He completed his specialty training (Specialty Certificate, 2001) in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in UMB and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Maxillofacial Pathology (Diploma ABOMP, 2003). He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (Fellowship Certificate AAOMP, 2001) and the American Academy of Oral Medicine (Fellowship Certificate AAOM, 2004).

 

Academic Positions (past and present)

He served as Full Time Assistant Professor (2002-2006) and Director of the PhD and Residency Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Department of Diagnostic Sciences and Pathology, Dental School, UMB, USA (2004-2006). 
He is currently Professor and elected Chair (2018-present) in the Department of Oral Medicine and Pathology (Assistant Professor: 2006-2014, Associate Professor: 2014-2018), School of Dentistry, NKUA. He is also Chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, School of Dentistry, NKUA (2018-present). 

Administrative Positions (non-academic - past and present)

Before his election as EAOM President (September 2018), Professor Nikitakis served as EAOM Secretary General (2014-2018).

He is currently (2015-present) President of the Hellenic Society of Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology (HSOMOP), in which he has also served as member of the Executive Council (2007-2009) and Treasurer (2009-2015). He is also member of the Scientific Committee of the Dental Association of Athens (2008-present). He has been member of the Organizing and/or Scientific Committees of several Scientific Conferences, including the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Biennial EAOM Congresses, and co-chair of the International Scientific Committee of the 14th Biennial EAOM Congress.  

 
Clinical Expertise

His clinical interests include the clinical diagnosis and management of oral and maxillofacial diseases and the histopathologic diagnosis of oral, head and neck lesions, especially focusing on oral premalignant conditions and cancer. 

Research Interests

His research interests primarily focus on oral, head and neck oncology / cancer research (immunohistochemical and molecular markers; cell signaling; novel antineoplastic strategies). He has received and participated in various research grants.

Publications

He has over 150 peer-reviewed published papers with more than 2.300 citations (h index: 28) on Scopus. He has also written a Research Monograph and several chapters in Textbooks and Scientific Handbooks.

He also serves as Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Board member or reviewer of various scientific journals and was recently invited as Special Guest Editor in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology.

 

Awards and Honors

He has received awards for academic performance during his postgraduate studies and for competitive research protocols. He has presented and/or participated in numerous scientific papers in national and international meetings, several of which have received honors and awards, including the Gorlin Award and the Waldron Award of the AAOMP, as well as EAOM awards in Orlando 2014, Antalya 2014, and Turin 2016. Finally, he has been invited as Visiting Professor/Lecturer in several Universities in the USA and elsewhere.
